DD.comment: While the comparison to Wes Welker might seem inevitable to some, we know at least one pro scout has compared McGaha to ex-N.F.L. star Cris Carter. We like that comparison much better -- similar size, speed and athletic skills during their college careers. Also, both were blessed with freakishly big and strong hands -- a great trait for a receiver. McGaha can reportedly hold 10 baseballs at once -- 5 in each hand!

***

Closer look at Northwestern's full-sized strong safety Brad Phillips.

DD.comment: According to our league scouting sources, Phillips was measured at 6'2" even (not 6'4") and 219 pounds. That makes him a borderline safety/linebacker "tweener" of sorts, as N.F.L. teams tend to automatically move taller safeties (6'3" and over) to linebacker. Scouts have estimated Phillips' 40 times at 4.70, so if he doesn't improve on that, bulking up and playing linebacker might be his best chance to stick in the N.F.L. He came into the season, by the way, with a free agent grade.

Heralded University of Illinois wide receiver Arrelious Benn is off to slow start.

DD.comment: We actually have some pretty good sources in the league and they had Benn as a borderline 1st-2nd round pick coming into the season. If he continues to struggle one would assume he'd be wise to stay for his senior year. However, as we've seen so many times, N.F.L. teams draft mostly based on "potential" rather than "production", so a great Combine showing can make up for Benn's less than stellar perfomance on the field...The two junior wide outs that were clearly ranked higher than him (solid first-round) coming into the season, according to our sources, were Damian Williams of U.S.C. and Dez Bryant of Oklahoma State.

DD.comment: We know for a fact that N.F.L. scouts have "estimated" Toby Gerhart's 40 time at 4.60. LeGarrette Blount (Oregon) and Charles Scott (L.S.U.), who are reportedly regarded as solid tailback prospects, also received 4.60 "estimates" from scouts coming into the season. Knowshon Moreno ran a official 4.68 at the 2009 N.F.L. Combine and was the 12th pick overall...How fast does Toby Gerhart have to be to line up at tailback in the N.F.L. and why is the standard for speed not the same for him, assuming he does run a 4.6?
