***

In-depth look at Arkansas State star defensive end Alex Carrington, who's considered a legit N.F.L. prospect.

DD.Comment: Scouts have measured Carrington at 6'5", 280 pounds and timed him running the 40 yard dash in 4.78 seconds, which is very good for a full-sized defensive end.

***

Dallas Cowboys' rookie right tackle Robert Brewster will miss his entire rookie season due to injury.

***

Pat Kirwan of NFL.com: Top 10 intriguing training camp battles.

DD.Comment: N.F.L. teams always talk about the need to "add speed" to their defenses. With that in mind, it's surprising the Chargers are so high on Kevin Ellison as a potential rookie starter at safety -- he ran between 4.84 and 4.96 (official hand times) at the 2009 N.F.L. Combine. We thought for sure he'd be forced to bulk to play linebacker or be relegated to special teams duty only in the N.F.L. Also, we believe the Chargers big problem last season was losing Shawn Merriman -- when your men up front can't pressure opposing quarterbacks, the cornerbacks and safeties are going to be at a huge disadvantage.

***

N.F.L. cornerback prospect Vic Hall intent on playing quarterback for Virginia.

DD.Comment: Hall is currently regarded as a latter round/free agent prospect by scouts as a defensive back. While playing quarterback as a senior might be where his heart is at, at 5' 9" it's very likely he won't play there in the N.F.L. So the position switch could hurt his chances of being drafted and maximizing his pro potential as a cornerback/nickleback.

Draft Daddy's Top Small School Senior Linebacker Prospects (loosely ranked, with Bio links):

Terrance Gaston ~ Northeastern Oklahoma -- N.F.L. size and athletic ability (6'3",226/4.65) is why scouts are keeping a close eye on this D-2 star.

Matt Marcorelle ~ Delaware -- Productive, undersized college defensive end with decent speed, who projects as a pro linebacker.

Larry Hart ~ Central Arkansas -- College DE projects as a pro linebacker due to his size and confirmed next level speed (4.56).

Mark Masterson ~ Maine -- Not super fast (4.72), but at almost 6' 3" and 230 pounds he's a solid athlete and very durable.

Arthur Moats ~ James Madison -- Quite a few prospects ran well at J.M.U.'s last Pro Day, including Moats (4.56)

Ryan Routh ~ South Dakota -- Solid measurables for a N.F.L. strong safety (6', 226/4.56 40), but scouts currently project him as a linebacker.

Jacque Roman ~ Appalachian State -- Not real big (5' 11", 230) or fast, but he's been an absolute stalwart on defense for A.S.U.

Honorable Mentions:

Dane Fletcher ~ Montana State University; Sam Scott ~ West Chester University; Chris Brown ~ Sam Houston State; Mike Morales ~ University of California-Davis; John Jacobs ~ Saginaw Valley State University; Deron Minor ~ McNeese State University; Jake Lewko ~ University of Pennsylvania; Josh Mahoney ~ University of Northern Iowa; Chris Johnson ~ South Dakota State University; Michael Johnson ~ University of North Alabama

DD.Comment: None of the players listed above are currently regarded as likely draft picks heading into their senior years. However, if history is a guide, we expect one or two small school linebackers, at least, will emerge as seniors and be selected next spring...Random Notes: Three of the prospects listed above displayed sub 4.6 speed at Pro Days -- Arthur Moats and Larry Hart, who are undersized college defensive ends and hard-hitting U.S.D. strong safety/linebacker Ryan Routh...Sam Houston's Chris Brown is a transfer from the University of Texas, while Cal-Davis' Mike Morales is a transfer from the University of Arizona.

Draft Daddy's Top Small School Senior Defensive End Prospects (loosely ranked, with Bio or stat links):

Austen Lane ~ Murray State - Size/speed ratio (6'6",260/4.64) might draw comparisons to N.F.L. star Jason Taylor.

James Ruffin ~ Northern Iowa - Classic defensive end prospect (6'3", 267), who recorded 10 sacks and 18 TFL's as a junior

Danny Batten ~ South Dakota State - Speedy (4.68) 6'3", 250 pounder similar to Atlanta Falcons DE/OLB Kroy Biermann.

Andrian Tracy ~ William & Mary - Size (6'3", 240) makes this productive, agile C.A.A. star a likely N.F.L. linebacker prospect.

Tim Knicky ~ Stephen F. Austin - At 6'4", 232lbs, with 4.62 speed, this Big XII caliber athlete should project as a pro linebacker.

Joe Ma'aseia ~ Portland State - Underrated, athletic big man can fit in as a 3-4 defensive end or 4-3 defensive tackle.

Drew Berube ~ Hillsdale College - Legit N.F.L. size and speed (6'3",260/4.77) is the reason scouts are keeping a close eye on this D-2 star.

Honorable Mentions:

Eugene Sims ~ West Texas A&M; Christian Anthony ~ Grambling; Kevin Linehan ~ Weber State; Sam Washington ~ Jackson State; Taylor Scott ~ Central Arkansas

DD.Comment: Lane and Ruffin are the only two players listed above that are regarded as likely draftable prospects heading into their senior years -- both currently have solid middle round projections, with the potential to move into the third round area. The versatile Batten, who might be able to play outside linebacker in the pros, is right behind the pair....There is a lot of talent after the top three, as any of the players we ranked after Lane, Ruffin and Batten have the potential to impress scouts and receive draftable grades with strong senior years, coupled with excellent post-career workouts.

***

Texas Tech defensive end McKinner Dixon and Kansas State wide receiver Deon Murphy will enter the supplemental draft.

DD.Comment: Scouts had McKinner Dixon rated as a priority free agent heading into his senior season. It will be interesting to see if he can set up a workout in hopes of impressing N.F.L. teams by next Thursday....We have no solid info on Deon Murphy, so we have to assume he will not be drafted next week, unless he can somehow wow scouts in a private workout in the next five days. His name has already been removed from the Wildcats roster over at www.kstatesports.com, so it's safe to say he is, in fact, leaving the school....We do know, however, that fellow Kansas State wide receiver Brandon Banks ran a blistering 4.27 at his pro day. Banks was given a draftable projection, despite his glaring lack of ideal size -- 5' 7", 151.

Nevada-Reno tailback Luke Lippincott returns after second knee surgery, hopes to impress scouts.

DD.Comment: Prior to his injury last season, scouts had Luke running the 40 yard dash in the low 4.7's and ranked him as a priority free agent. Obviously, he'll either need to improve his 40 time a bit, or teams will ask him to bulk up in order to play fullback at the next level. That possibility might explain why he's so concerned about improving his receiving skills -- modern day N.F.L. fullbacks rarely touch the ball, except as pass catchers out of the backfield.

Draft Daddy's Top 10 Small School Senior Safety Prospects (loosely ranked, with Bio or stat links):

Shann Schillinger ~ Montana - A great pro day showing (blazing 4.40 speed) and a breakout junior season have scouts really fascinated.

Jeromy Miles ~ Massachusetts - Navy transfer is a classic strong safety prospect, who possesses N.F.L. size and speed.

Quinton Andrews ~ North Alabama - Former West Virginia starter has joined Terry Bowden at D-2 power U.N.A.

Chad Washington ~ Texas A&M-Commerce - Don't let the "LB" fool you, this 5' 11", 205 pounder, with a track background, can really run -- sub 4.5 speed. Former Missouri Tiger.

Donye McCleskey ~ Indiana State - Scouts believe this versatile strong safety might be the Sycamores top overall athlete.

Taylor Lanigan ~ Murray State - Productive player, with next level speed, size and strength, who deserves a lot more attention than he's getting.

Quentin Scott ~ Northern Iowa - Didn't post great stats as a junior, but scouts like his size speed ratio (6'4", 226/4.60). Might project as a pro linebacker.

Luke Bonus ~ Hofstra - Has been a star linebacker since he arrived at Hofstra, but scouts will look at him as a strong safety.

Martin Corniffe ~ Howard - Prolific Bison has caught the eye of scouts, though his possible lack of next level speed might be a concern.

Ryan Hinds ~ New Hampshire - Could be a future star north of the border (C.F.L.) if he doesn't opt for medical school.

Honorable Mentions:

Tommy Connors ~ Southeastern Louisiana; Ray McDonough ~ Hofstra; Terrell Whitehead ~ Norfolk State; Myles Burnsides ~ Northwest Missouri State

DD.Comment: At this point, Schillinger and Miles are clearly the top two prospects in the group above. Both are considered latter round type prospects, but have the potential to move into the middle rounds with strong senior years and good post-season workouts. Big East transfer Andrews also has some draft potential, but needs to prove he possesses next level speed.

DD.Comment: Good list, but we would rank The University of Massachusetts right after Appalachian State, even ahead of Delaware and Montana on that list. First of all it's a huge school -- close to 20,000 undergrads and they can draw from approximately 220,000 alumni that live and work in Massachusetts. Also, the Minutemen have fielded very good teams in recent years and could be an ideal fit in the Big East, which needs to expand and has lacked a presence in the Boston market since Boston College left for the A.C.C.

Draft Daddy's Top 10 Small School Senior Cornerback Prospects (loosely ranked, with Bio or stat links):

Akwasi Owusu-Ansah ~ Indiana (PA.) - D2 star is currently the #1 small school cornerback prospect, by a wide margin.

Chris Richards ~ Stony Brook - Big 10 talent, but was bounced from Michigan's program after repeated off-field problems.

Roderick Williams ~ Alcorn State - High character prospect, good speed. Being mentored by N.F.L. Hall of Famer Darrell Green.

Cortez Gilbert ~ Appalachian State - Cousin of two ex-N.F.L. first rounders. Gifted corner, but 40 speed might be a concern.

Jarvis Richards ~ Youngstown State - Speedster returns from A.C.L. injury. His father, Jimmy Warren, played in the A.F.L./N.F.L. from 1964 to 1977.

Patrick Stoudamire ~ Western Illinois - Terrific all-around athlete, selected to the prestigious U.S. Army All-American Bowl in 2005.

Gabriel Derricks ~ University of San Diego - Has been a impact player in the Toreros secondary since arriving at the school in 2006.

Scotty McGee ~ James Madison - Kick return star ran a blazing 40 (4.37) in the rain at Pro Day, but has battled too many injuries.

Terrence Johnson ~ California (PA.) - Good size/speed ratio gives this Division II All-American a chance to impress N.F.L. scouts.

Kelvin Rodgers ~ Minnesota State-Mankato - 6', 175 pound speedster needs to bulk up a bit, but is a dual threat for the Mavs -- star cornerback and kick returner.

Honorable Mentions:

Adarrious Ross ~ Lindenwood University; Eddie Calvin ~ Southeast Missouri State; Josh Morris ~ Weber State; Angelo Williams ~ Ferris State; Seth Williams ~ Richmond University

***

DD.Comment: Overall, this is a pretty solid group of players. We would not be surprised if three to five of these prospects winds up being drafted next spring. As always, these small school cornerbacks are very tough to rank this early because their draft stock will be determined, in large part, by their post-senior year workouts -- particularly their 40 times. Last spring, for example, when only a few big school cornerback prospects ran above a 4.50 40 at the N.F.L. Combine, little known small schoolers Derek Cox, Greg Toler and Will Middleton quickly rocketed up the draft charts after turning heads at their Pro Days.

***

Florida wide receiver Riley Cooper can't have it both ways in tough baseball/football decision.

DD.Comment: This should be a no-brainer. Cooper stunk up the joint for Florida's baseball team this spring and was just a 25th round draft pick in baseball. Meanwhile, he's set to be the #1 receiver for the reigning National Champion Florida Gators and is considered a middle round N.F.L. prospect by scouts...Perhaps Urban Meyer, a former minor league baseball player (Atlanta Braves), should remind Cooper that just having a fancy 40 time and a surprisingly good vertical leap won't suddenly help him hit fastballs and curveballs -- something he couldn't even do on the college level.

Senior strong safety Kyle McCarthy has the highest preseason pro grade out on Notre Dame's squad.

DD.comment: According to our sources, McCarthy is ranked just ahead of left tackle Sam Young as Notre Dame's top senior prospect. Both go into their final college season with draftable projections...The writer mentioned popular Irish cornerback Mike Anello. N.F.L. scouts actually acknowledge the 5' 8', 175 pound former walk-on as a potential free agent prospect due to his extraordinary special teams prowess.

Draft Daddy's Top Small School Senior offensive tackle Prospects (loosely ranked):

Tony Washington ~ Abilene Christian -- This nimble 6' 6", 300 pounder is yet another draftable N.F.L. prospect from D-2 power A.C.U. Has body type that scouts like.

Vladimir Ducasse ~ Massachusetts -- Is 6'5", 330 pounds and very agile. Grew up in Haiti, but moved to Connecticut in high school. Some scouts project him as a future N.F.L. guard.

Casey Knips ~ South Dakota State -- Sort of raw and he needs to bulk up a bit, but he's fairly athletic for a 6'8", 305 pound tackle. Had excellent junior day workouts.

Austin Howard ~ Northern Iowa -- Not as athletic as some of the others, but he looks great on film. Former tight end is 6'7" and 318 pounds.

Derek Hardman ~ Eastern Kentucky -- Is "only" 6'5" and 295 pounds, but has the frame to add another 15 to 20 pounds. Fantastic overall athlete, with a surprisingly impressive track background.

Jared Veldheer ~ Hillsdale -- It's extremely rare that a D-2 school will stumble upon a 6'7", 320 pound athlete that can run a sub 4.9. Very raw, but loaded with potential.

J'Marcus Webb ~ West Texas A&M -- N.F.L. scouts are keeping a close eye on this agile 6'7", 310 pound University of Texas transfer.

James Williams ~ Harvard -- Is probably the best N.F.L. prospect among all the seniors in the Ivy League. Might project as a guard in the N.F.L. at 6'4" and 290 pounds.

Andre Barbour ~ Eastern Kentucky -- University of North Carolina transfer is currently regarded as a solid rookie free agent prospect, but has the potential to improve his stock.

DD.comment: We'd say the first 5 or 6 players listed above are considered draftable going into their senior years. Washington and Ducasse, who head this very early list, both seem to be middle round prospects, at the point...Knips reminds some of a small school version of Sebastian Vollmer (Patriots pick)....Watch out for Hardman and Veldheer. They currently carry latter round projections, but both possess the type of athletic skills that will allow them to standout at post-season workouts (Combine or Pro Days).

DD.comment: Hall is currently considered a latter round/free agent cornerback prospect by scouts, mostly because he's not real big (5'9", 180) and scouts question his foot speed -- believe he runs high 4.5's or low 4.6's. As is usually the case, no one can accurately project cornerbacks this early because their draft value is almost always directly tied to their post-senior year 40 times.
