Ted Miller of ESPN ranks the Top 10 Defensive Ends in the Pac-10.
DD.comment: Our early reports, from NFL sources, have Oregon's ultra-productive defensive end Nick Reed listed at about 6' 1" and 250 pounds and running over a 5.0 in the 40 yard dash. If that proves true, he'll have a tough hill to climb, if his goal is to play in NFL because he'd be considered a defensive end/outside linebacker "tweener". Interestingly, Oregon State's vastly underrated defensive end/outside linebacker Slade Norris is listed a shade over 6' 2" and only 238 pounds, but NFL teams have his 40 yard dash at about 4.64 seconds, which is very good, if that proves to be accurate.

ESPN: Is fast-rising junior Al Woods L.S.U.'s next great defensive tackle?
***
Article above mention former L.S.U. Tiger Claude Wroten, who was just suspended by the NFL for the upcoming season.
***
We've been inspecting all the info we've gotten from our many inside sources in recent days, as we are just about set to update our small schoolers section. Anyway, while looking at the tailbacks we wondered where are the fast F.C.S. and D-II running backs?
Outside of Liberty's Rashad Jennings (who reportedly runs in the mid to high 4.4's), there doesn't seem to be any super fast players near the top of the list of small school tailbacks on the NFL's radar. But then we looked towards the bottom of the list and found a fascinating prospect: Stan Zwinggi of Texas State.
While Zwinggi's only listed at 5' 9" and 190 pounds by scouts, NFL sources have him running 4.35 or better and he's currently ranked as a priority free agent going into his senior season. Now, it's not like Zwinggi is a nobody, because he played in the very prestigious 2004 Army All-American Game, with so many elite prep stars around the nation. Unfortunately, much like Ex-Chadron Star Danny Woodhead, he was inexplicably ignored by every Division 1-A school in America, despite a great high school career and blazing speed? Zwinggi hasn't racked up the numbers Woodhead did in college, but he's bounced around from wide receiver to tailback and battled injuries in 2007.

DD.comment: If we had to pick one player from the list above, at this point, it would be U.C.L.A.'s super-sophomore Brian Price, who looks like an absolute Sedrick Ellis clone ... Also, while some in cyberspace may have rated U.S.C. defensive tackle Fili Moala as a sure fire first rounder, he doesn't even crack National Scouting's early list of top 400 prospects! We recently asked a source, who has talked to NFL scouts, why Moala isn't ranked much higher and he said much of this stems from injury concerns scouts have about him. He also believes, that while Moala definitely has next level potential, he's been wildly overrated by some outside of the league (as Ted Miller suggests), largely based on his strong showing as a sophomore (in 2006).

***
Closer look at a pair of Boston College stars -- tight end Ryan Purvis and defensive tackle Ron Brace.
DD.comment: According to our sources, both of the Eagles noted above are fast rising NFL prospects. Purvis already ranks among the top 50 senior prospects by National Scouting. While he's not well known by casual fans, he fits the prototype of what NFL scouts are looking for at the tight end position due to his size (6' 4", 260) and overall athletic ability. Brace isn't, currently, ranked as high by scouts as fellow B.C. defensive tackle Busari Raji, but he's very agile and does a nice job clogging the middle at 6' 3" and 335 pounds.

***
Hamilton Tiger-Cats running back Jesse Lumsden is dominating the C.F.L.
DD.comment: After a great showing at the East-West Shrine Game, Lumsden ran a 4.45 40 at 6' 2" and 225 pounds in front of NFL scouts prior to the 2005 draft. That's the same size and speed showing that got Ronnie Brown drafted 2nd overall that spring, but Lumsden, to our surprise, went undrafted. From there he only got limited chances to display his considerable skills as an undrafted free agent in Seattle, partly due to injuries, which is unfortunate ... It's also worth noting former Auburn tailback Tre Smith is doing great things up in Hamilton as a speedy tailback/return specialist, so that's a player that also deserves to be on the N.F.L.'s radar.

DD.comment: Burnett has been a player we've liked a lot since he burst onto the scene as a super freshman for the Knights back in 2005. But we have to disagree with the writer of the article that claims Burnett is currently a hot pro prospect. Things could change radically, but one of our main inside N.F.L. scources claims Burnett barely cracks National's top 500 prospects going into his senior season. It sounds crazy, but that's how he's currently listed. Problem is he's officially measured in at a shade over 5' 9" (180 pounds) and N.F.L. teams have his 40 time marked down at about 4.60. That's fairly pedistrian for a cornerback, so he'll need to show he can run much faster in workouts if he wants to be drafted in the top 4 rounds, or so.

DD.comment: We intend to post our Mountain West Conference preview real soon. While we like Wyoming tailback Devin Moore quite a bit as a third down back and a special teams performer, a 3rd round projection seems kind of high, at this point? One major scouting source projects the 5' 9", 180 pound tailback as a 7th rounder, but NFL teams have reportedly clocked him in the low 4.4's, so we aren't surprised someone would rank him higher than expected due to the speed factor.

Ohio State linebacker James Laurinaitis leads the way on Scout.com's Top Seniors Big Board.
DD.comment: Like Chris Steuber, we love Ian Campbell's motor and all around talent level. But according to one of our sources, he barely cracks the top 400 prospects on one N.F.L. pre-season scouting list. Scouts have him at a shade over 6' 3" and 250 pounds, which is fine. But they have timed (or estimated) his 40 yard dash between 5.03 and 5.15 seconds, which is, of course, a problem for a player projected as an outside linebacker. Obviously, his status could change significantly if he has a big senior season and, more importantly, he shows he can run much faster than expected.

Sam Farmer of the L.A. Times reports Brett Favre might not mind playing for a team other than the Green Bay Packers.
DD.comment: Some have suggested it would be ashamed if Favre ever wore a uniform other the classic green & gold threads of the Packers. But, don't forget, Favre began his N.F.L. career wearing the black & red of the Atlanta Falcons, so it's not exactly the same as Joe Montana wearing a Chiefs uniform at the end of his career.

Pro Football Weekly: Will Brett Favre return to the Green Bay Packers?
****
It's still early, but, according to our sources, several top juniors are already looking into their N.F.L. options for next year and among that group is a quartet from Clemson: Wide recevier Jacoby Ford, defensive end Ricky Sapp, running back C.J. Spiller and cornerback Chris Chancellor.
Other juniors, reportedly, looking into the possibility of leaving school early for the N.F.L. include:
RB Knowshon Moreno ~ Georgia (a redshirt sophomore)
RB Chris Wells ~ Ohio State
WR Darrius Heyward-Bey ~ Maryland
OT Andre Smith ~ Alabama
DT Vince Oghobaase ~ Duke
DT Al Woods ~ Louisiana State
DL Ricky Jean-Francois ~ Louisiana State
DE Greg Hardy ~ Ole Miss
DE George Selvie ~ South Florida
CB Vontae Davis ~ Illinois
CB Captain Munnerlyn ~ South Carolina
SS Taylor Mays ~ Southern California
FS Emanuel Cook ~ South Carolina.
One F.C.S. name considering his options could be Elon wide receiver Terrell Hudgins, who agents have already attempted to contact. Many media and Elon people believe he is a 3rd-4th round selection, however, several N.F.L. personnel have said that he is a 4.7 type player and is probably no higher than a 6th or 7th rounder. One thing to remember is that former New Hampshire wide receiver David Ball had similar speed and production to Hudgins and went undrafted as a senior. Hudgins would have to improve his 40 by .10 or .20 to warrant more than a late round look.

Despite stiff competition, rookie linebacker Dan Connor thinks Carolina is a good fit him.
DD.comment: Nice article, but once again the media is pushing a big lie: It mentions in the article that Connor's 4.6 speed may "hinder him" in the N.F.L. Again, the Average Linebacker at the last Combine ran in the mid to upper 4.7's, so Connor's 4.6-something at Pro Day is well above the prospect average. And, the numbers/averages we posted are the "official" Combine numbers, straight from league sources, not some wildly inflated, bogus numbers floating around cyberspace. Matter of fact, Carolina recently selected Jon Beason in round one and he Ran a 4.78 at the 2007 Combine and he's worked out fine, so far, for the Panthers. So this idea that N.F.L. linebackers need to run as fast as cornerbacks to have a chance is absolutely absurd.

The Sports Network takes an in-depth look at the Top F.C.S. Quarterbacks.
DD.comment: Nice job done by David Coulson of The Sports Network, that was a very informative article. Also, our small school expert Josh Buchanan has sent us some comments regarding the N.F.L. chances for some of the quarterbacks mentioned in the link above:
Appalachian State's Armanti Edwards, a junior, would have to be a utility player to stick in the N.F.L. and is a probable 7th round or free agent type .... Central Arkansas' Nathan Brown, Rhett Bomar of Sam Houston State and fast rising Harvard gunslinger Chris Pizzotti are all considered draftable prospects, at this point .... East Coast based small school signal callers Liam Coen and Dominic Randolph
may surprise scouts, if they can elevate their games as seniors....Finally, Matt Nichols of Eastern Washington is only a junior, but he's a player that could attain late round or priority free agent grades going into his senior season.

The Buffalo Bills have signed the son of former N.B.A. superstar Karl Malone and released ex-Army fullback Mike Viti.

Virginia Tech is moving once prized quarterback recruit Cory Holt to wide receiver in order to give him a better chance to play in the N.F.L.
****
DD.comment: According to Virginia Tech's official website the 6' 4", 230 pound Holt has a run a 4.52 (40) and displayed a 35" vertical in spring workouts, so at least he has the basic skills to play wide receiver or H-Back in the N.F.L.
