Georgia senior linebacker Dannell Ellerbe has emerged as a team leader.

DD.comment: National Scouting has Ellerbe as the top inside linebacker in the draft (top 15 overall) and he's rated a shade ahead of more well known stars Rey Maualuga and James Laurinaitis. Even though Ellerbe is ranked so high by National, he only got a 2nd round projection, as they have rated only six prospects as solid first rounders, at this point.

Our good friend/small school expert Josh Buchanan just sent us a message regarding our Top 5 Ivy League Seniors:

I am very high on Harvard's Desmond Bryant, if he is eligible. He has all the tools. Quarterback Chris Pizzotti is indeed the top N.F.L. prospect in the Ivies, at this point. Ryan Pilconis is an interesting one as well.

I haven’t seen linebacker Jason Colabella of Penn, but he is supposed to be good. One player not written up who should be noted if he has a huge year is Columbia defensive end/defensive tackle Phillip Mitchell. He is 6’5 ˝, 266, and popped 8.5 TFL and 5 sacks last year. He has progressed gradually throughout his career and if his trend continues he should have a 9-13 sack season and earn First team All-Ivy League honors and honorable mention or maybe third team All-America honors.

****

Top 5 Ivy League N.F.L. Prospects in the Senior Class, according to our sources:

QB Chris Pizzotti, (6'5", 225), Harvard

FB Colin Cloherty, (6'2", 235), Brown

OT Ryan Pilconis, (6'6", 295), Harvard

DT Desmond Bryant, (6'5", 290), Harvard

RB Mike McCleod, (5'10", 200), Yale

DD.comment: At this point, Harvard quarterback Chris Pizzotti is the only player noted above that is widely regarded as a likely draft pick and his early projection is as a 5th to 7th round prospect .... Harvard defensive tackle Desmond Bryant missed the 2007 season, but according to one of our sources, it's possible he could return to the Crimson's lineup this fall.

****

Tony Pauline of TFY.com has posted the early National and B.L.E.S.T.O. Running Back Rankings.

DD.comment: Based on our info, his National list looks okay, but his Blesto list looks very shaky. Bizarre, to say the least. For example, we know Pauline has claimed that Boise State tailback Ian Johnson and Boston College defensive tackle B.J. Raji got first round projections from the Blesto list he's putting forth. This seems crazy, considering Johnson got a 7th round projection from N.F.L. scouts last winter when he thought about leaving early and Raji got a 4th round projection from National prior to the 2007 season. He sat out all of last season, so would Blesto really rise him from a 4th rounder to 1st rounder without playing a down? We don't think so! Also, keep in mind very few people have access to the "actual Blesto list", at this point, so consider this when reading the link above.

****

Small School Insider Josh Buchanan's Prospect Notes:

Safety Lardarius Webb of Nicholls State, a transfer from Southern Miss., was not ranked, but many feel he will rise and be a mid round prospect.

**

Wide receiver Quinten Lawrence of McNeese State has blazing speed and is similar to former Appalachian State star Dexter Jackson. He is a player to watch.

**

Highly athletic offensive linemen to look for are Ben Coblyn of Massachusetts, who began his college career as a basketball player at Boston University, Florida State transfer Cornelius Lewis of Tennessee State and Sam Allen of Grand Valley State.

**

Also mammoth size players such as Cal-Poly wide receiver Ramses Barden, Furman tackle Joel Bell, and Henderson State guard Louis West are ones to look at.

**

Big cornerbacks with good speed are D.J. Clark of Idaho State and Domonique Johnson of Jackson State.

**

Chris Pizzotti of Harvard is 6'5 ˝ and possesses a strong arm. He could be one to move up.

**

At running back Rashad Jennings of Liberty has the size/speed combo and production to move up big time.

**

At tight end there are some athletic players who have great size in Robbie Agnone of Delaware and Brian Mandeville of Northeastern.

**

At wide receiver big players with good speed include Kole Heckendorf of North Dakota State, JaRon Harris of South Dakota State, and Dominique Edison of Stephen F. Austin.

**

Looking for a combine invite from Division III? Probably going to be quarterback Jason Boltus of Hartwick. He is a player I helped the coach make the N.F.L. aware of. I think the kid has the tools to be a real surprise.

**

N.A.I.A. also has a possible combine invite in Bethany (KS) wide receiver Willie Edwards. He is 6'2, 213, and has 4.5 speed.

***

He is not heavily on the N.F.L.'s radar, yet, but Gardner-Webb offensive tackle Demario Deese has the talent to certainly play in the N.F.L. and probably will get a look with him moving to guard this year.

**

Others not heavily on the N.F.L.'s radar, at this point, to look out for include University of Mary outside linebacker Shawn Melland (6’5, 230, 4.6) and Hampton cornerback Sam Pope (5’11, 195, 4.4).

DD.comment: We've just added video links for five potentially fantastic freshman that played in the most recent U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

Every summer when we update our senior positional rankings we do the best we can based on what we saw in games the previous season and based on the knowledge we've accumulated from various connected sources. But, every so often we find out there is a player who wasn't really that highly regarded by college fans or media outlets, who has actual pro scouts absolutely smitten with his potential. After consulting with several sources (including those with access to N.F.L. scouts), we've been told that we significantly underrated University of Florida wide receiver Louis Murphy.

Now, we've always ranked Murphy among the top 20 receivers in his class. Thing is, we didn't realize many in N.F.L. think he belongs near the very top of his class, mostly due to his size (6' 2"), speed (4.4) and upside potential. We must caution that early rankings from scouts don't always hold up, as prospects need to perform well as seniors and impress in workouts, but if we are reading the smoke signals coming from N.F.L. scouting departments correctly (and these seem crystal clear), Murphy is currently ranked the top wide receiver in the senior class by many teams and projects as a solid first to early second round pick. We have to figure that would shock some people. It surely did surprise us a little bit.

A few weeks ago we started updating our senior rankings and posted them in the blog, position by position. Since that point, we've been inundated with so much info from many "insider contacts" we've built up over the last few years, that we may just re-rank the players again to give our readers a more accurate take on what N.F.L. scouts are thinking of going into the season.

For example, there are many players on the radar of N.F.L. scouts that few cyber sites even know about at this point. One example is little known (to fans) Syracuse fullback/H-Back Tony Fiammetta, who is considered a likely 5th to 6th round prospect by actual N.F.L. scouts, heading into his senior season. There are many more players like him and we intend to single them out for our readers in the the coming weeks.

DD.comment: We thank Josh for all the links and all the help behind the scenes, it's much appreciated. We just wanted to note, in the first link (above) Josh looked at four prospects that are widely believed to draftable by actual N.F.L. scouts and execs. The second group is comprised of five excellent athletes, but they are not as highly regarded by scouts, at this point.

West Virginia quarterback Pat White was picked by the Cincinnati Reds in last week's Major League Baseball amateur draft.

DD.comment: We know the young and rising Cincinnati Reds Consulted with N.F.L. Scouts before last week's draft in order to gauge how the top two-sport prospects were perceived by N.F.L. teams. The fact that they waited until round 49 to draft White could mean N.F.L. scouts have told them Pat has a promising future in pro football as a wide receiver, making it less likely he'll ever play baseball. Don't forget, Anaheim drafted White in round 4 last year and it turned out to be a wasted high pick.

He possesses a lot physical talent, but it's hard to impress when you don't play due to off-field issues. Related Item from Rivals.com: 12 other Non-B.C.S. Tailbacks to watch out for

DD.comments: Of the group listed above, Rodney Ferguson and Luke Lippincott really jump out at us as little known, but very talented prospects, going into their senior seasons. If Ferguson can stay healthy (and eligible) as a senior and displays nice speed in postseason workouts, he could be a Matt Forte type prospect (power runner; good hands out of the backfield) to look out for. Lippincott is a mini-Mike Alstott, in the sense that he has an insane workout routine and runs with a lot of power. He weighs a lot less than Alstott did coming out, but pound for pound he's real strong and is very quick hitting the hole. He also possesses soft hands as a receiver. A good senior season, coupled with impressive workouts, could make him a draftable running back prospect.

Also, Boise State's Ian Johnson is easily the most recognizable name listed above, but we were told by a West Coast source that he only got a 7th round projection from N.F.L. scouts last winter. He'll need to add some bulk to his narrow frame if he wants to improve his draft stock as a senior.

The Milwaukee Brewers selected Minnesota wide receiver/outfielder Eric Decker in the 38th round of the M.L.B. draft

DD.comment: Decker only fell this far in the draft because Major League teams know he's a special talent in football and won't likely give up the sport to play in the low minors full time. Best Bud Selig's Brewers can hope to do is sign him for a few weeks over the summer and then hoodwink him into giving up his best sport for baseball, using the excuse that he'd have greater longevity in baseball. Problem with that, however, as many former football stars have found out, is a player has to make it to the Majors first and that's a real tough road for a former two-sport athlete that didn't concentrate on baseball only. The speedy Decker hit .329, with 3 HR's and 28 RBI's in just 161 at bats this season as the Gophers' starting right fielder.

DD.comment: We've liked the speedy and underutilized Kyle Hudson as a slot receiver/return specialist the last few years. But if he's being compared to Juan Pierre, we woudn't blame him if he decided to give up football and started playing baseball for pay.

Find out why University of Minnesota wide receiver/outfielder Eric Decker is being compared to former Michigan State All-American wide receiver Kirk Gibson, who, according to veteran football scouts and execs, could've been a first round pick in the 1979 N.F.L. draft if he concentrated on football.

Below are some other College Football stars that have Major League Baseball potential:

Jake Locker, QB, Washington (Drafted by L.A.-Anahiem)

Patrick White, QB, West Virginia (Drafted by L.A.-Anahiem twice)

Riley Cooper, WR, Florida (Drafted by Philadelphia)

Golden Tate, WR, Notre Dame (Drafted by Arizona)

Kyle Williams, WR, Arizona State (Drafted by White Sox; Son of Chi-sox G.M. Kenny Williams)

Chad Jones, DB, Louisiana State (Drafted by Houston)

Mike Jones, WR, Arizona State

Andrew Means, WR, Indiana

Kyle Hudson, WR, Illinois

Toby Gerhart, RB, Stanford

Kendric Burney, CB, North Carolina

DD.comment: All the players listed above are outfielders, except Jake Locker (a pitcher).... Riley Cooper of the Florida Gators was considered a "elite" Major League Baseball Prospect (high 1st round?), before he injured his hand prior to his senior year in high school and then decided to focus on football... Chad Jones of L.S.U. and Locker of Washington are both considered "outstanding" Major League Baseball prospects.
