Bleacher Report: Is former U.S.C. running back Reggie Bush who we thought he was?

DD.comment: Last year an insider told us Boise State tailback Ian Johnson wanted to leave early for the N.F.L., with his friend Ryan Clady, but received a 7th round projection from N.F.L. scouts and stayed in school. We asked a former college running back, who had watched Johnson play and practice, why he would be rated so low by scouts? He replied that Johnson is "way too small (skinny), may not be as fast as advertised and has no moves". That could, also, be a very accurate scouting report for Reggie Bush, based on what we saw in 2007.

New Orleans has waived four fairly well known rookie free agents, including ex-Stanford Cardinals T.C. Ostrander & Evan Moore.

DD.comment: Teams are signing and keeping around fewer undrafted free agents this spring due to the fact that N.F.L. Europe has gone out of business. The N.F.L. used to give roster exemptions for each player sent overseas, so, for example, if a team allocated 12 players to the spring league, their off-season roster could swell to 92 players. But since that league folded in 2007, N.F.L. team's must, once again, strictly adhere to the league mandated 80 player roster limit in the off-season.

Florida Gators' recruit Matt Patchan escapes serious injury after a senseless shooting in the park.

DD.comment: Thankfully Matt and his friends are okay, as things could've been much worse. By the way, this isn't your average recruit. Also, it's silly to bring up his sub 4.7 40 time as "hurting" him, when his Pro Day 40 times were better than Curtis Lofton's (4.81 to 4.89/ hand timed) and Jordan Dizon's (4.71 to 4.75/ hand timed) times at the Combine.

Below we have listed 10 talented college football players that will be playing this season after transferring from one F.B.S. school to another following the 2006 season. All 10 sat out the 2007 season.

QB Mitch Mustain ~ Arkansas to U.S.C. -- Had a fantastic '06 season as a true freshman, leading the Razorbacks to an 8-0 record in 8 starts. It's not 100 percent clear why he left Arkansas, but he's expected to battle current U.S.C. starter Mark Sanchez for playing time this fall.

QB Zach Frazer ~ Notre Dame to Connecticut -- Frazer was one of the top quarterback recruits in the class of '06, but he really didn't have much success competing for a starting job at Notre Dame. While Huskies' head coach Randy Edsall, an offensive guru, might be the right man to get his game back on track, he won't play much as long as Tyler Lorenzen is healthy.

QB Jevan Snead ~ Texas to Ole Miss -- Extremely highly regarded coming out of high school and, truth is, he didn't fare poorly in practices at Texas. Thing is, he just happened to play the same position as budding Horns' legend Colt McCoy and felt he had to leave to get ample playing time. Looked great in spring practices last month. Has the potential to be a big star in Oxford.

RB Emanuel Moody ~ U.S.C. to Florida -- Another highly sought after recruit from the class of '06, who got lost in the talent shuffle at Southern Cal. Took a risk transferring to another top 10 school and will need to shake off the rust and play better than he did in spring football (and hold on to the football), if he expects to get significant playing time in the talent laden SEC.

WR Damian Williams ~ Arkansas to U.S.C. -- Mustain's high school teammate, was selected to the SEC's all-freshman team in '06 after hauling in 19 receptions for 256 yards. Suffered a serious shoulder injury late in 2006, so he may've had to sit out the 2007 season even if he did stay in Little Rock. Has fully recovered and looked good in spring practices, meaning he'll contend for a starting spot in L.A.

WR Nyan Boateng ~ Florida to California -- Hot shot football/basketball recruit out of New York City, who sort of got lost in shuffle in Gainesville due to all the offensive talent the Gators have recruited since Urban Meyer has come aboard. With DeSean Jackson and Lavelle Hawkins gone to the N.F.L., Boatang could be an ideal replacement, if he can continue to progress as a route runner and stay out of trouble off the field.

WR Jordan Cameron ~ B.Y.U. to U.S.C. -- Tall and athletic receiver, who may be bulked up and tried at tight end at Southern Cal. He actually played basketball at B.Y.U. in 2006-07, so he's not only changing schools, he's also switching sports. Brother of U.S.C. women's hoops star Brynn Cameron, who had a son with Matt Leinart in '06.

DE Trevor Anderson ~ Cincinnati to Michigan State -- 6' 2", 260 pounder was one of the Bearcats' better defenders in 2006 as a sophomore (6 sacks/13 TFL's) and was expected to anchor their defensive line in 2007. However, the Detroit native decided to leave Ohio and follow former Cincy head coach Mark Dantonio to Michigan State. Should be one of the Spartans better players this upcoming season.

DE Jeff Schweiger ~ U.S.C to San Jose State -- Once upon a time Schweiger was considered a can't miss prospect at U.S.C. He played fairly well in his three seasons with the Trojans as a backup, but was limited by injuries and could never seize a starting job. He, obviously, hopes a big senior season in the W.A.C. will get him back on the N.F.L.'s radar.

DB Antwine Perez ~ U.S.C. to Maryland -- This 6' 2", 200 pound, hard-hitting safety was one of the Trojans' top recruits in the '06 freshman class. He played in seven games for U.S.C. as a true freshman, mostly on special teams. But, for whatever reason, he decided to abruptly abort his career on the West Coast in order to come back to the East and play in the A.C.C.

DraftDaddy.com Flashback: 2007 rookie free agents that beat the odds and Made N.F.L. Rosters.

DD.comment: The list above seems to stay consistent each year we've tracked it (since 2004). About 30 to 35 UFA's make 53 man rosters to begin the season (average about 1 per team). Then a trickle get added to rosters up until week 9. After that point, the flood gates start to open as struggling and mediocre teams tend to replace injured veterans with lower priced practice squad types, hoping they can find a future diamond in the rough...Also, we just tracked the rookies added to rosters the first 16 weeks and did not add the flood UFA's added to rosters prior to the final week of the season. It seems to us a lot of teams added rookies (and IR'ed vets) too liberally leading up to week 17 just to keep the youngsters on their off-season 80 man rosters.

DD.comment: Let's hope this move has everything to do with an injury, because we know there are some potentially damaging (very unfair) rumors regarding Bryant out in the football world. That's one of the reasons we reluctantly dropped him in our rankings a few months ago. These rumors, by the way, have nothing to do with substance abuse, as one poster in the link hinted at in the link above.

Q&A with Tennessee's first round pick Chris Johnson.

DD.comment: We'd like to thank our Combine insider for telling us back in February that Tennessee really coveted Johnson. He made us look good, as our own Matt Bitonti told a East Carolina radio station last Friday that the former Pirate was likey headed for Nashville....Speaking of our Combine insider, he re-affirmed to us that the Cato June story we posted the other day is true. DD.comment: A DD.com reader was nice enough to link our free agent lists (which we are still updating) at Colts.com's message boards the other day. While checking it out, we noticed one of the responders in the thread questioned our sites credibility because we listed Senn as a "linebacker". If he's wondering why we did that, he should check the story we linked above. We've been following Senn since he was sophomore and know he can play safety, but we are guessing his ultimate role will be as a linebacker.

N.Y. Newsday: Hard work might earn instant fan favorite Danny Woodhead a spot on the Jets roster.

****

A writer from the Bleacher Report seems to believe Oakland Raiders' owner Al Davis is a "trend setter".

DD.comment: The article above would make more sense if it was dated like 1984 or 1992? Actually, just to clarify from a comment we made below, we don't think Darren McFadden was a terrible pick, but Oakland was 6th in N.F.L. in rushing last season, so where is the need? One has to wonder when Davis and the Raiders are going to realize that all the speed and athletic ability at the "skill positions" will mean nothing if they don't fortify the offensive and defensive lines?

****

The N.F.L. Draft was Cable's Most-Watched Show for April 21-27.

****

The Indianapolis Colts intend to use small, but very fast rookie Marcus Howard at defensive end.

****

Respected Green Bay G.M. Ted Thompson thinks local hero Justin Beaver has a chance to stick in the N.F.L.

DD.comment: It was incredible to see some fans strongly boo Thompson on Saturday, as he's done a fantastic job re-building the Packers since taking over for the overwhelmed Mike Sherman back in 2005. Thompson, who is a former N.F.L. linebacker, is a great football mind, in the Marv Levy, Bill Polian and A.J. Smith mold, who likes stocking his roster with good "football players". Apparently some fans in Wisconsin prefer the Al Davis method -- ignore team needs and draft mostly based on a players height, weight, 40 time and hype. "If" the Packers can stabilize their quarterback situation, expect them to be one of the top teams in the N.F.C. for a while.

Rookie defensive end Greyson Gunheim is happy to be an Oakland Raider.

DD.comment: We've confirmed Gunheim received a $10,000 signing bonus from the Raiders. The "average" signing bonus for a rookie free agent is about $4,000. According to the numbers we've seen so far, the highest signing bonuses given to UFA defensive ends are Martail Burnett (Vikings/$23,000) and Curtis Johnson (Colts/$20,000).

****

Former N.F.L. player Bucky Brooks lists Ten Rookies poised to succeed now in ideal situations.

****

Who will be Middle Tennessee State's next N.F.L. draftee?

****

Early exit strategy doesnít pay off for three University of Oklahoma Juniors.

DD.comment: Good article. While we agree that Smith and Kelly probably have to be upset that they did not go in round one, Lofton has to be estatic that he was drafted as high as he was after running between 4.81 and 4.89 at the Combine (hand timed) and displaying a George Costanza like 24" inch vertical leap. Despite this, he may still be a fine player for the Falcons because he's instinctive, tough and plays hard all the time, but another season at Oklahoma would not have improved his stock if he re-posted those numbers in Indy.
