We've written some good things about Florida Atlantic's talented sophomore quarterback Rusty Smith, who's impressed us quite a bit, since the early part of the season. A few weeks ago we even posted an article that quoted F.A.U.'s head coach Howard Schnellenberger saying Smith Would be a Future First Round Pick.

While it's too early to tell how good he will be, we don't think Schnellenberger's exaggerating too much -- the kid has a ton of potential. Anyway, draft fans can get a glimpse of the 6' 5" gunslinger tonight, as the fiesty and talented young Owls take on the Memphis Tigers in the New Orleans Bowl (ESPN 2, 8:00 PM EST.).

DD.com E-Mail [Insider]:

University of Western Michigan offensive guard James Blair will make a Willie Colon type rise before the draft. He will get a lot of attention once the N.F.L. offensive-line coaches see him and he's definitely better than some of your top 10 guards. Quite a few scouts are going back for the second look and are seeing what I saw at first.

DD.com Reply: Okay, first of all, we'd like to thank the source for the help. It's much appreciated. And, we did change some of his words a bit in order to 1) help him keep his anonymity and 2) make this E-Mail more blogable (if that's a term?)....Anyway, this comes from a very respectable source, who's done nothing but feed us accurate info, so we do believe Blair is a prospect that could very well surprise.

In-depth look at brand new South Florida folk hero Greg Camarillo, who helped snap the Miami Dolphins winless streak.

DD.comment: The writer of the article above claims Camarillo runs a 4.6 40 and that is "laughable" for a N.F.L wide receiver. We've been following the draft for this site every day, for four years, and we can tell you there are a lot of receivers in the N.F.L. (including fairly recent first round picks & Pro Bowl types) that run a 4.6 or worse. Somehow the media is putting out this myth that every good receiver in the N.F.L. has to run a 4.4 or better. That's simply not true.

It's been a big year for Toledo Rockets' punter/N.F.L. prospect Brett Kern.

DD.comment: Kern mentioned Toledo wide receiver Andrew Hawkins in the link above. Hawkins isn't real big, but he possesses excellent speed and toughness and has a chance to make it in the N.F.L. or the C.F.L. as a special teams standout and wide receiver.

****

Here's a small school tackle that is starting to garner some attention from scouts: Northwestern State senior Demetrius Bell.

****

Will Michigan State wide receiver Devin Thomas make an early leap to the N.F.L.?

****

Rookies Michael Johnson and Craig Dahl did a a fine job as the New York Giants' starting safeties @ Philadelphia.

DD.comment: Believe it or not, we had Dahl, who played at North Dakota State, ranked among the Top 150 freshmen prospects in the nation back in early 2004. We do intend to post a similar list for the current freshmen class fairly soon and, hopefully, we'll be able to find some more potential small school gems before everyone else does.

Potential small school gem Chad Rinehart has been invited to the Senior Bowl.

DD.comment: Rinehart's teammate Brandon Keith, who will play in the Hula Bowl, is an Oklahoma transfer, that was once regarded as one of the top high school prospects in the nation, so he's certainly a player that scouts will pay attention to.

DD.comment: Looking back, we projected Penn as a 4th or 5th round pick coming out of Utah State, but his draft chances were severely hindered by an injury he sustained at the '06 Hula Bowl. The Bucs did a good job signing him off the Vikings practice squad and waiting for him to get healthy.

****

Which Oklahoma Sooners are leaving early for the N.F.L. draft?

****

Gardner-Webb star defensive end Brian Johnston has accepted an invitation to play in the Hula Bowl.

DD.comment: Brian Johnston has several things in common with Kansas City Chiefs' star Jared Allen, including the fact that both are from California and both were widely recruited by and committed to Pac-10 schools coming out of high school. Allen committed to Washington State coming out of high school, but was forced to go the 1-aa route due to academic issues. Johnston, meanwhile, had given a verbal pledge to Arizona, but he did not wind up in Tuscon due to a coaching change (Makovic to Stoops).

**

University of Minnesota wide receiver Eric Decker -- who was the Gophers best player as a sophomore -- has been added to the school's baseball team.

DD.comment: Decker, who baseball scouts love due to his size, speed and power potential as an outfielder, intends to play both sports at Minnesota. He finished his sophomore season with 67 catches for 909 yards and 9 TD's for the lowly Gophers (1-11). Decker had 6 receptions for 125 yards against Wisconsin cornerback/N.F.L. prospect Jack Ikegwuonu in week 12, so he also has a lot of potential as a football prospect.

****

N.F.L. personnel have told Clemson quarterback Cullen Harper he could be a first-day pick, if he decides to leave school early.

****

It looks like Clemson running back James Davis is leaning towards making the early jump to N.F.L.

****

****

****

U.C.L.A. defensive end/outside linebacker Bruce Davis has been invited to the Senior Bowl. Also, three more Bruins were Invited to the Hula Bowl.

****

As we reported a few months ago, nimble University of Connecticut guard Donald Thomas has gone from a walk-on to a legit N.F.L. prospect.

DD.comment: By the way, it's not very rare that a former walk-on would become an N.F.L. prospect -- especially players from state universities. But most of the walk-ons that become pro prospects either played other sports or were heavily recruited by lower level football programs and decided to pay their own tuition at a higher level program in order to compete for a scholarship and, perhaps, get a shot at the N.F.L. Thomas is different, however, because he was just a student at UConn, with no desire to play sports at all until he was spotted in the gym and asked to try-out for the team.

****

No one is doubting Cleveland G.M. Phil Savage for selecting Joe Thomas with the 2nd overall pick.

****

Analysis of three N.F.L. scouts indicates the Chicago Bears are deficient in offense, defense and coaching.

****

Below are some other N.F.L. prospects that have Major League Baseball potential:

Dennis Dixon, QB, Oregon (Drafted by Atlanta)

Jake Locker, QB, Washington (Drafted by L.A.-Anahiem)

Patrick White, QB, West Virginia (Drafted by L.A.-Anahiem two times)

Riley Cooper, WR, Florida (Drafted by Philadelphia)

Golden Tate, WR, Notre Dame (Drafted by Arizona)

Kyle Williams, WR, Arizona State (Drafted by White Sox; Son of Chi-sox G.M. Kenny Williams)

Chad Jones, DB, Louisiana State (Drafted by Houston)

Mike Jones, WR, Arizona State

Kyle Hudson, WR, Illinois

Eric Decker, WR, Minnesota

Toby Gerhart, RB, Stanford

Kendric Burney, CB, North Carolina

DD.comment: All the players listed above are outfielders, except Jake Locker (a pitcher).... Riley Cooper of the Florida Gators was considered an "elite" Major League Baseball Prospect (high 1st round?), before he injured his hand prior to his senior year in high school and then decided to focus on football... Chad Jones of L.S.U. and Locker of Washington are both considered "outstanding" Major League prospects.

Pro Football Weekly: Top Linebacking Prospects

DD.comment: We've seen a lot insiders knock the current class of linebackers as "weak" and "uninspiring". But is it fair to judge a group, or an entire draft class, before these prospects even play a down in the N.F.L?

Back in the spring of 2000, most pundits said that the quarterbacks coming out of college were very weak armed and unathletic, compared to the quarterback's in the 1999 draft class. But, in hindsight, that 2000 Draft Class has produced a handful of quality N.F.L. quarterbacks and a couple of "no-names" selected in round 6 have gone to multiple Pro Bowls. One those 6th rounders was Tom Brady, who some would argue is the best quarterback in N.F.L. history.
