DD.comment: As we expected Mario Williams, who has not been a high impact player thus far and was an unpopular choice in Houston, drops out of the Chronicle's top 10...But, surprisingly, struggling Tennessee quarterback Vince Young not only stays in the Top 10 -- he's still ranked 3rd overall?

Even more surprising, Reggie Bush, who has been so effective that New Orleans will likely need to use more high picks on tailbacks very soon, is ranked number 7 overall? Off the top of our heads, we'd easily take DeMeco Ryans, Devin Hester or a healthy Chad Greenway for New Orleans, over Bush. And there are probably, at least, 25 more we'd take over the very media friendly Bush, who has been an average runner and shows very little explosiveness after the catch as a receiver.

We recently made major changes to our positional rankings for the Top Senior Prospects in college football and, once again, we divided them into 3 categories:

Top 10 Seniors: These are the top 10 prospects at each position, plus players we feel are "on the cusp" of cracking the top 10.

Top Small Schoolers: We listed about 150 small school prospects, sorted by position, that have the talent to catch the eye of N.F.L. scouts.

Big School Surprise: These are very draftable prospects from FBS schools (1-A) that could surprise people and climb the draft charts as seniors.

DD.comment: To see the rankings lists, just click the links above and follow the moving arrows....By the way, although we've seen the vast majority of the players on the three above lists play (may've not seen a few D-2 types, but know about them), our rankings are mostly based on the knowledge we've accumulated on these player via information we've received from "inside sources" and the mainstream media. For example, wide receivers Andre Caldwell, Todd Blythe, Will Franklin, Keenan Burton and Dorien Bryant will not drop from our Top 10 senior receiver's list (or on the cusp) any time soon, because we know all were handed 2nd to 4th round projections from the N.F.L.'s Draft Advisory Panel after the 2006 season.

Led by fast-rising senior wide receiver Marcus Henry, the Kansas Jayhawks inched closer to a possible title game shot last night at Oklahoma State.

DD.comment: Along with Kentucky Wildcats' standout Steve Johnson, no other senior wide out in the nation has helped his stock more this season than the Jayhawks' Marcus Henry. While we know the 6' 4", 210 pound Henry can play the game on the field, as always, his draft status will likely hinge on how well he works out for N.F.L. scouts after the season. But, at the very least, his huge senior season will get him more looks in All-Star games and may even lead to a Combine invite.

Henry's sudden rise as a senior sort of reminds us of Brandon Marshall's quick rise as a senior a few seasons ago at Central Florida. Looking back, it seemed like Marshall went from a total non-factor to a forth round pick in just a matter of months...Also, we would not put Kansas State star Jordy Nelson in the same category as Johnson and Henry, because he was very high on our radar as a sophomore in 2005 (top 10 on our 2005 sophomore watchlist), but fell backwards a bit as a junior due to injuries and uneven play by the Wildcats' quarterbacks in 2006.

New York Times' guest blogger Colt Brennan writes about his talented group of wide receivers, including Oakland, California native Davone Bess.

DD.comment: Maybe it's the Rainbow Warriors' green uniforms, but we can't tell you how much Davone Bess reminds us former New York Jets star Wayne Chrebet, as a football player. Both are exactly the same height and weight. Both run about the same 40 time (4.5?), have very similar builds (strong legs), possess a great pair of hands, play with a lot grit and can rack up a lot of yards after the catch....With N.F.L. teams placing greater value on slot receivers in recent seasons, Bess, a junior, could be a very underrated prospect whenever he's ready to leave the Island for the N.F.L.

Pro Football Weekly's Draft Notes.

DD.comment: We've watched the University of Iowa quite a bit the last few years and can tell you Bryan Mattison has been the Hawkeyes' best defensive linemen in most games we've watched. While he's mostly being tagged as a "high-motor" player, we would not be surprised if he works out better than expected, as we think he displays a lot of quickness chasing down running backs and quarterbacks from his defensive end spot....Perhaps the better question is this: Is Mattison a tweener? Not fast enough off the edge for N.F.L. scouts and not big enough to play tackle? Only time will tell how things go.

DD.com E-Mail [Coach]:

No disrespect to the small school wide receivers you've listed, but Eddie Cohen from Western Carolina University is one of the best talents in the always tough Southern Conference. This guy will have an opportunity to play on Sunday's.

DD.com Reply: Thanks for the input, Coach, it's very much appreciated. We are aware of Cohen, who reminds us of former W.C.U. star David Patten, and thought about adding him to the list at the start of the season, but you can't add too many....After a much closer look at the season he's having, we probably will find a place for him on the small schoolers list, when we re-do it.

Is the draft stock University of Arizona linebacker Spencer Larsen on the rise?

DD.comment: Here's the deal....very simply put: Larsen is a tough, talented linebacker. We've seen him play a number of times since 2005 and fully know that. But his draft stock will likely depend on how fast he runs at the Combine. If does about 4.7 (or faster), he'll be drafted in the top 4 rounds and have a chance to start in the N.F.L....If, however, he runs a 4.85 (or worse), he'll be considered nothing more than 7th round longshot, career backup type. When you figure ex-Arizona running back Chris Henry did almost nothing in college, yet was drafted in round 2 last spring based on a fancy 40 time and excellent workouts, it's probably that simple.
