The Minnesota Vikings have released undrafted rookie defensive lineman Joe Anoai from Georgia Tech. Anoai was let go, partly, due to injuries. But if his potential N.F.L. career continues to sputter, don't be surprised if he eventually goes into Pro Wrestling.

Nebraska receiver Maurice Purify, arrested for his role in a disturbance at a Lincoln bar, has been authorized to participate in a pretrial diversion program.

Here is a fascinating tidbit from the NBA: Did you know the 30 team league splits it's multibillion-dollar national television contract among 31 owners?

In, perhaps, the best business deal in the history of sports (or any business), the former owners of The Spirits of St. Louis -- from the long-defunct American Basketball Association -- receive one-seventh of the annual TV revenue from each of the four former A.B.A. teams currently in the N.B.A. -- Nets, Spurs, Pacers and Nuggets. Estimates are that deal has netted the Spirits' owners over $180 million since the mid 1970's and the deal lasts as long as the N.B.A. is around!

DD.com E-Mail [Max]: I see you have Peyton Hillis as one of your top prospects at fullback, he looks a little small to me to play fullback in the pros, would a position change be better for him at the next level? Also on the subject of fullback's one of my favorite prospects Chris Pressley of Wisconsin. Check out this video of him at 6'1'' 260 pounds squatting over 600 pounds at 19 years old.

DD.com Reply:

Max, Hillis is listed at 6' 2" and 238 pounds, so his "listed" size is adequate for an N.F.L. fullback (although he's a bit tall). But we do agree with you that Hillis isn't the classic burly, hammer-head blocker you see so many teams use to pave the way for tailbacks in the N.F.L. We see Hillis as more of a Brian Leonard type tailback, who is a "great" receiver out of the backfield, with the ability to run the ball on a team that employs the running back by committee approach. He is, also, a very good blocker.

Hillis, who was extremely highly regarded coming out of high school, has tremendous athletic ability for his size. For example, how many fullbacks can you remember that were (or are) feared return men on special teams? Even though he won't get a ton of touches in the Razorbacks talented and crowded backfield as a senior, he should be heavily on the N.F.L.'s draft radar if he can avoid all the injuries that nagged him in 2006. He's just too athletically gifted and skilled to ignore.

Nice video on Chris Pressley. He's a player we heard a lot of great things about, but he has not been able to stay healthy. If he can bounce back and maybe slim down a little a bit, he could be a fascinating N.F.L. prospect going forward. By the way, we have just deleted Pressley from our list of seniors, because he was redshirted last season.

P.S: Max thanks for the E-Mail's and thanks for supporting the site. If you don't mind, can you please leave us a return E-Mail address in the future, as we may not be able to answer every question in the blog. Thanks again.

DD.comments: The prospects above are very loosely ranked....This is an outstanding group of fullbacks. And with more N.F.L. teams going to running back by committee (i.e. all 4 teams in the N.F.C & A.F.C. title games), several of the players listed above -- particularly the top 5 -- have the type speed and athletic ability to line up at tailback and pick yardage running the football as "powerbacks". This group also has 1990's style fullbacks that mostly excel at blocking and catching the ball out the backfield -- Alexander, Cox, Petrie, Hahn and Pressley.

Owen Schmitt is one of the best all-around fullbacks in the nation, but he's a bit taller (listed at 6' 3") than your average N.F.L. fullback, so some N.F.L. teams may look at him at H-Back or tight end -- ala former Tennessee star Frank Wycheck, who was a running back at Maryland. A shift to H-Back will be more likely, of course, if West Virginia is not inflating his height. If he's really about 6' 1", he'd be close to the the ideal size to line up at running back or fullback in the N.F.L....Also, before we get any E-Mails asking why we ommitted Brandon Hancock, we must point out he decided not to persue an extra season of eligibility. Fearing for his health, the once super-prospect has retired from playing football.

DD.com Comment: We will follow Jared's progess in the weeks to come, as he could possibly be a fast riser in a mediocre point guard class. We do know this, however: This kid would've been the perfect point guard for the University of Connecticut. If the Huskies had recruited him, they may've had a shot to make the tournament last season. He's from the city of Hartford and he would've focused on staying in school all 4 years, not jumping to the N.B.A. way too early, only to find himself glued to the bench for a few seasons.

DD.com E-Mail [Max]: I saw your list for Senior Running Backs, and I noticed Colorado State's Kyle Bell was not on it, is this because he was injured last year and is still a Junior?

DD.com Reply:

Max, going into the 2006 season, we had Kyle Bell ranked among the top 5 tailbacks in the junior class due to his outstanding 2005 season and unique combination of size, speed and athletic ability. He was, unfortunately, injured (torn ACL) a few days prior to the Rams' 2006 season opener, so we believe he was (or will be) redshirted and remain in the junior class.

We will probably drop Bell a little in our junior rankings because the current junior class is very strong at running back. Also, we have to see how Kyle's knee and body recovers from surgery. He's expected to be close to a 100 percent when the season starts, which is great news for Colorado State fans. But any time a tailback suffers a serious knee injury it can be a tough road back -- i.e. L.S.U.'s Alley Broussard.

DD.com Comment: This news story has not been reported by the media, but we trust our source. So, at the very least, we have to believe the talented Gaither is seriously thinking about jumping to N.F.L. We thank our source for the potential scope.

****

Baseball News: Former Notre Dame All-American wide receiver Jeff Samardzija was absolutely hammered tonight in a class A-Game -- 9 hits & 7 earned runs in 1.2 innings.

DD.com Comments: As we noted many times before, the Shark's move to baseball never made a once of sense to us, other than the Cubs wanting to piggy back on his Notre Dame fame. Again, he was a solid pitcher in a very mediocre Big East baseball conference, while he was a superstar in football. Check 5/19's blog notes for more of our opinions on this.

By the way, struggling Sarasota Reds outfielder B.J. Szymanski, who's name appears in the boxscore we linked, was one of the better Ivy League football prospects we've seen over the last decade, or so, and we follow the Ivies fairly closely. He was a speedy wide receiver at 6' 5", with outstanding athletic ability and nice hands. It's hard to say how good of an N.F.L. prospect he would've become because he left Princeton early to sign a very lucrative baseball deal, but he seemed like a Zach DeOssie type to us -- an elite athlete, who possessed the skills of BCS conference starter.

One more note: B.J. Szymanski's younger brother Blake Szymanski is a solid quarterback prospect at Baylor. He struggled a bit in 2006 as a redshirt freshman on a average team, but he has ideal size for a quarterback and a fairly strong arm. Also, Blake is an excellent athlete for his size.

****

A source has informed us that Mark Washington of Texas State will enter the supplemental draft. He played defensive tackle at T.S.U., but played linebacker at Arizona State. He's ineligible for next season. He also says he's not a true defensive tackle but can play defensive end or linebacker. Washington is 6'3" and 250 pounds and says he runs a 4.51 40 yard dash.

Checking in with former Notre Dame wide receiver Jeff Samardzija, who is already 0-2 with the Daytona Cubs.

DD.com Comment: While it's way too early to judge how he'll fare in baseball, we still think the Shark was a much better football prospect. He was just a good pitcher (4.33 ERA) in a very mediocre Big East baseball conference in 2006. Meanwhile, he was a two-time All-American at the highest level of college football and one of the first players invited to the Senior Bowl and Combine.

If you objectively look at the facts/stats from his playing days at Notre Dame, all signs pointed to him having a much better chance to excel in football. We still wonder why so few people pointed this out? Perhaps it's because Jeff "looks the part" of a Major League pitcher much more than he does a N.F.L. wide receiver, so most in the media felt his choice to pursue baseball was simply a "no-brainer". To us, it was questionable, at best, as he would've likely been a starter in the N.F.L. early in his career.

P.S: We have one question for all the Cubs fans that wrote to us after he jumped to baseball in January and told us it was a very wise choice for Samardzija to shun football because he wouldn't get seriously injured playing baseball and could pitch with the Cubs until he was 45: What are former Cubs pitching prodigy's Mark Prior and Kerry Wood up to this season?

Two Penn State football players were ordered to stand trial Friday after authorities said they were involved in a fight, while charges were dismissed against four other players, including potential superstar cornerback Justin King.

Here is what bothers us: The men who had the guts to punch Scirrotto square in the face and smack a cellphone out of his hand for no apparent reason, when they had a three man to one advantage, didn't have the courage to stand outside and fight like men when Scirrotto got his own help. Don't get us wrong, we don't condone this type of fighting at all. It does little good. Doug Nye: How ESPN made us think the N.F.L. Draft is something special.

DD.comment:

ESPN isn't pulling a con job on anyone. They are putting forth a product and viewers are responding by watching in large numbers. It just goes to show how popular pro and college football have become. Hard core college fans want to see where their schools former stars end up in the pros. Meanwhile, N.F.L. fans want to be introduced to prospects that may become future stars in the league. This is why N.F.L. execs are considering moving the first round of the draft to Prime Time Television.

Howard Balzer: Phil Savage's genius netted quarterback Brady Quinn for Cleveland.

DD.comment: We sat next to Phil Savage at the 2006 Senior Bowl weigh-in. Hands down, he was friendliest N.F.L. exec we've met at the Senior Bowl the last few years. So good luck to Mr. Savage and Cleveland's fans. We think they did a nice job on draft day, even though they had to pay a steep price to trade up for Quinn.

One Round Mock Draft: Andrew Perloff of SI.com must think the Oakland Raiders will be terrible, again, this upcoming season, because he has them selecting Arkansas tailback Darren McFadden number one overall in the next N.F.L. draft.

DD.comment: Does anyone think our good friends over at CougarBoard.com (B.Y.U. fans) are going to be happy with Perloff's mock draft?

****

Fixed Link: Is former University of Texas running back Ramonce Taylor heading to the Arena Football League?

DD.comment: This story doesn't make a lot sense, because A.F.L. teams rarely feature tailbacks. Arena teams throw the ball the vast majority of plays on offense and usually only utilize their fullbacks in goal-line or short yardage situations. Also, fullbacks are expected to double as linebackers in the indoor league.

We'd figure the C.F.L. -- which features tailbacks more prominently and has wider fields -- would be a better fit for Taylor, if he can't get a shot in the N.F.L. Also, considering the C.F.L. took in Ricky Williams in 2006, we'd think Taylor's off field problems would not be a big issue in Canada.

Boston College safety Ryan Glasper feels former Eagles' head coach Tom O'Brien may've ruined his chances to play in the N.F.L., by forcing him to play with a serious hip injury in 2006.

DD.comment: Timely story, as we've actually received a few E-Mails today asking if Glasper had signed a free agent deal. We've known about this Glasper/O'Brien feud privately for quite a while and are not surprised Glasper is speaking out loudly against his former coach, after not being drafted. Ryan felt he was a legitimate N.F.L. draft prospect, who was robbed of his chance to showcase his skills because O'Brien wouldn't allow him to redshirt after the injury.

Realfootball365.com: Brady Quinn vs. John Beck

DD.comment: By the way, we laughed off Suzy Kolber's comment last weekend that Beck and Drew Brees (a player some compare Beck to) are "about the same age". We figured Brees -- who is going into his 7th N.F.L. season -- was over, or very close to, 30.....We were wrong. Brees was born in 1979 and Beck was born in 1981. At current Beck's age (26), Brees was going into his 5th N.F.L. season.

And don't forget, Brees had already been declared a bust after three average to poor seasons in San Diego. He only got another chance out west, because Phillip Rivers -- who was brought in to replace him -- had a prolonged holdout in the summer of 2004.

Point? Dolphins execs and fans better hope their new "Brees clone" has a much faster learning curve than the real Brees did.
